Floyd Update from Marquesas [ So far this year Nuka Hiva has shipped over 680 tons of noni.]
===============================
November 27, 2005. Today we finish our visit to the Marquesas Islands and sail for Bora Bora. All total we visited 4 of the Marquesas Islands. We started on November 23 with Fatu Hiva, then Hiva Oa, then Ua Huka and finally Nuku Hiva. We spent a day at each except for our last stop at Nuku Hiva. In Nuku Hiva we spent one day on the NE side of the island at Hatiheu, then sailed in the afternoon to to anchor on the SE side of the island at Taiohae Bay. The most exciting of all of the islands for us was of course Nuku Hiva because this is were John Wadsworth over 10 years ago flew to from Tahiti looking for the availability of noni. This is the island where they thought John was looking for the Nono, which in Tahitian was the fruit but it the Marquesas is a small blood sucking fly.
We left the ship in the morning and boarded two buses to take us on a historic journey to trace the footsteps of John. As we left the ships' tender to step on dry ground the drums and dancers welcomed us to their island. We then drove on a steep paved road up the mountain and over the top viewing spectacular scenery as we went. This is the same road John took over 4 hours to traverse 11 years ago because then it was then a rough 4-wheel drive unkept muddy road. Today because of the prosperity that noni has brought to these islands, the standard of living has increased and many lives have been blessed. We stopped at the lookout over the valley where John looked through his binoculars and saw the large quantities of the noni plant. It was on this spot that John had his vision of taking the noni fruit to the world and blessing the lives of millions of people. What a great experience to stand in that spot and see for ourselves what John saw and to see that vision of his come to pass. Millions of lives have been blessed both physically and financially, with Ann and I among them! From here we went into the valley below and toured different noni farms and met many of the pickers and learned how they harvest and prepare the noni.
For lunch we met on the beach where part of the "Survivor" series was filmed. It would be hard to describe the excitement that was in the air as the noni harvesters met and entertained us. We were treated like royalty with people waving palm branches and singing for us. A special show on the beach was performed by male and female dancers. There dancing is much different than the typical Tahitian dancing that we are used to. The heavily tattooed men were dressed in palm leaves that were made for the occasion. Even the women dancers wore palm leaves and decorated themselves with flowers which grow abundantly here. All were dressed as they would have been hundreds of years a go when the Europeans first discovered the lands. Their dancing here is much more ferocious and warlike compared to the Tahitians. They have a passion to their dancing that you would have to see to understand. It was all filmed so I am sure that in the future you will see what we have experienced.
After the dancing, the pit was opened. Very early in the morning they dug a pit, built a fire, put rocks in to heat. After the rocks were heated they lowered the pig and the breadfruit and covered it all with leaves and let simmer for many hours. What a feast! After lunch, the mayor of the island spoke. Through a translator he spoke to us and one particular point he made was this, "You have come far, but through the noni we have a common point. We must all remember Johns dream of taking the noni to the world. We have the hands to work, and what we as distributors are doing is very important for the families of these islands. Their lives have improved because of our efforts".
The woman who is in charge of all the pickers on the island, and who organized this event for us stood in front of us and with tear filled eyes told us what a blessing we were for their island and people. How grateful they all were that we were there and how long they had looked to this moment. How honored they were to see us and express their feelings of love towards us.
Kerry then spoke and said, "The only thing that we can do wrong is to let pride get into our heart as we bless the lives of these people. I am so grateful for the harvesters and the distributors that make all of this possible". Needless to say there was not a dry eye among us.
Many of the harvesters then came to us and gave us gifts of shells and necklaces that we will always cherish. A sweet elderly woman also gave Ann and I a baked banana wrapped in a banana leaf.
Kelly and I talked after this experience and he remarked, "This is why we can never stop. We have started something in motion that is much bigger than any of us, and It will last much longer than any of us."
