Chicago  2002 Juneteenth Parade Honors Joshua A. Barney and other Civil Rights Era Leaders:

In the year 2002, The Second Annual Juneteenth Celebration and Parade in Chicago, IL celebrated the life of Joshua A. Barney, the first African American to seek election to the Office of City Council in Prichard, Alabama. His campaign created a wave of violent opposition and political turbulence never witnessed before early in the Civil Rights Era. Joshua A. Barney's political leadership, contributions to the development of community and nation including building housing and developing schools; political courage, in the face of violent racial injustice and the political oppression of his time, established his legacy as a "Pioneer in Protest" and as an American Hero.  In his memory and to encourage outstanding political activism, the Joshua A. Barney Award is presented as the "highest honor" in the City of Prichard, Alabama usually in conjunction with the Africatown Folk Festival.
